黑刚玉是以高铁铝矾土或者高铝矾土加高铝铁矿，在电弧炉里经过高温熔融冶炼然后冷却，从而制得的一种以α- Al2O3 和铁尖晶石为主矿相的灰黑色结晶体，其特点是Al2O3 含量适中。黑刚玉生产能耗约为棕刚玉的二分之一，冶炼过程中不需要还原气氛，极少有CO2排放，是一种节能环保的耐磨材料。因而具有硬度适中、韧性好、自锐性好、使用中产生的磨削热低，不易烧伤工件表面等特点。

明悦黑刚玉具有很好的自锐性，磨削时发热量少，加工件的光洁度较好，适用于零件电镀前底面抛光，铝制品和不锈钢的抛光，也可用于抛光光学玻璃、加工木材等。由于它的亲水性好，可用在制造砂纸、砂布和树脂磨具，还可以作研磨膏和抛光粉。黑刚玉由于铁含量高，因而不宜用于制造陶瓷磨具。
